Incentives for efficiency upgrades changed in 2025. The federal tax credits for home energy improvements and home solar ended for work placed in service after December 31, 2025. Many utility, state and local rebates continue, and they can still make a big difference.

Where to look now

  • Your electric and gas utilities: rebates for heat pumps, insulation, smart thermostats, water heaters and appliance recycling
  • Your state energy office: some states run home energy rebate programs
  • DSIRE (dsireusa.org): a database of incentives by state
  • ENERGY STAR's rebate finder for specific products
  • The Weatherization Assistance Program, if your income qualifies

Before you buy

  1. Check that the rebate is open and has funding left.
  2. Read the requirements: approved products, contractor participation, pre-approval.
  3. Keep receipts, model numbers and installer invoices.
