Getting accurate numbers
- Watts on the label are usually the maximum. Many devices, especially fridges and computers, average less.
- A plug-in power meter (about $20) measures real use over a few days and is the most accurate way.
- Fridges, freezers and AC cycle on and off, so measure them over at least a day.
- Your rate includes supply and delivery charges. Time-of-use plans cost more at peak hours.
