Standby power: the always-on load

How to find devices that draw power when "off", and what to do about them.

Cost: $0 to $30 4 min read

Many devices draw a small amount of power all the time: TVs, game consoles, chargers, set-top boxes, smart speakers. Each one is small, but together they can add up over a year.

Find them

  • Use an inexpensive plug-in power meter to measure devices when they're "off"
  • Check your utility's smart meter data for the lowest usage at night: that's your always-on load
  • Look at our calculator to see what each watt costs you over a year

Reduce it

  • Use a power strip to switch off entertainment centers and home offices
  • Turn off "instant on" or "quick start" settings on TVs and consoles
  • Unplug devices you rarely use, like spare-room TVs
