Appliances: use them well, replace them wisely
Settings, habits and when an old fridge or freezer is worth replacing.
Refrigerators, freezers, dryers and dishwashers all have settings and habits that matter. And an old second fridge in the garage is often one of the most expensive appliances in the house to run.
Settings and habits
- Fridge about 37 to 40°F; freezer about 0°F
- Clean refrigerator coils once or twice a year
- Clean the dryer lint filter every load and the vent duct yearly
- Use the dishwasher's air-dry or eco setting
Replacing
- Look for the ENERGY STAR label and compare yearly kWh on the yellow EnergyGuide label
- Measure an old fridge with a plug-in meter for a few days to see what it really uses
- Recycle an old second fridge or freezer properly; some utilities pick them up and pay a bounty
