Cut your water heating costs
Temperature, pipes, showerheads and when to consider a heat pump water heater.
Water heating is often the second-largest energy cost in a home. The first fixes are free or very cheap.
Quick wins
- Set the water heater to about 120°F (check your manual and household needs)
- Insulate the first few feet of hot and cold pipes at the water heater
- Fix dripping hot water taps
- Wash clothes in cold water when you can
Use less hot water
- Federal standards limit new showerheads to 2.5 gallons per minute; WaterSense-labeled models use 2.0 or less
- Faucet aerators are cheap and quick to install
- Run the dishwasher only when full
When it's time to replace
Heat pump water heaters use much less electricity than standard electric tank models. They need space and a cool-ish location, and your utility may offer a rebate.
