Weatherstripping doors and windows

Choosing the right weatherstrip and installing it in an afternoon.

Cost: $10 to $60 4 min read

Worn weatherstripping is one of the most common leaks, and one of the easiest to fix.

Types

  • Adhesive foam tape: cheap and easy for low-traffic spots
  • V-strip (tension seal): durable for the sides of sash windows and doors
  • Door sweeps: close the gap under exterior doors
  • Tubular rubber or vinyl: for door jambs, more durable than foam

Install

  1. Clean and dry the surface.
  2. Measure twice; cut to fit snugly at corners.
  3. Close the door or window to check for an even seal without forcing it.
