Hi there,
This issue's step: find your always-on load
If your utility gives you hourly smart meter data, look at the lowest hour of the night, often around 3 a.m. That's roughly what your home draws when nobody is using anything: fridge, freezer, router, chargers, standby electronics.
- Note the number in watts (0.3 kWh in an hour is 300 watts).
- Multiply by 8,760 hours and your rate to see the yearly cost. Our calculator does it for you.
- Walk around and switch off or unplug what doesn't need to be on, then check again the next night.
Cost: free, or about $20 for a plug-in power meter. Full guide: Standby power.
Seasonal tip
Before heating season, weatherstrip the door that gets the most use. A door sweep and new jamb seal take about ten minutes and cost less than $30.
Rebate note
Federal home energy tax credits ended for work placed in service after 2025, but many utilities still offer rebates on heat pumps, insulation and smart thermostats. Check your utility's website before you buy.
Keep the watts low,
